Follow the yellow brick road, to your death…

After a tornado whisks her away, Dorothy—a cunning witch disguised as an innocent farm girl—arrives in Oz. Behind her sweet smile lies a fiercely independent witch determined to let no one push her around.

With a tin woodsman, a scarecrow, a cowardly lion, and her loyal dog, Toto, Dorothy sets off to meet the Wizard in hopes of finding a way home. But she soon uncovers a dark truth: a malevolent power couple now rules the land, having dethroned and imprisoned the former gracious Wizard.

Can Dorothy survive the dangers of this surreal land and make it home? Or will The Land of Oz and its eerie residents have other plans?

Dethroning OZ is a corrupted retelling of Dorothy from The Wizard of OZ. This strange tale is part of the Twisted Tales of Familiar Faces collection, featuring classic beloved characters twisted into terrifying nightmares.

I have to preface this with I’ve seen The Wizard of Oz like 100 times. I have never read the book(s).
I really enjoyed this twisted version where the Wicked witch is not so wicked! The characters are… well, the characters. I loved their ‘regular’ names! I enjoyed the story arc and the resolution and thought it was really well done. I recommend this if you enjoy retellings!

  2. Michael Clarkson

Very good retelling of an already great story. However, with a few reversed roles, the storyline keeps you guessing.
My only complaint would be that it was too big a story to be compressed in to so few pages. A lot more could have been explored.

  3. Marlys

This is a great story. I enjoyed it. I think the author did a wonderful job of twisting a familiar story.

  4. Riann Fletcher

An imaginative horror retelling of The Wizard of Oz! Very fast paced with many surprising twists. This book is delightful and entertaining.

  5. Steve

So, the wizard of Oz but not. I, like some of the other readers have commented on, found it entertaining and different than the original, not that I can remember much of it. I liked it, couldn’t stop reading. Recommended read.

  6. Karleigh

Another amazing book in the Twisted Tales. I’m not a huge wizard of Oz fan but I loved what the author did. Creepy and twisty just like the tornado that took the house right out of Kansas.
